The Ball-Room Manual of
Contra Dances and Social Cotillons
Contra Dances and Social Cotillons
Back in print after nearly 150 years! A handy, vest-pocket compendium of "the good old Contra Dances of our ancestors."The Ball-Room Manual of Contra Dances and Social Cotillons, with Remarks on Quadrilles and Spanish Dance.Published in 1863 in Belfast, Maine, The Ball-Room Manual contains instructions for 58 dances. With all due respect to the mid-19th century dancing masters, there's more than an hint of truth in the comments of the venerable Ralph Page:
"For more than half a century dance manuals did their best to kill contra dances. Such dancing masters as Elias Howe, Edward Ferrero, Wm. B. De Garmo, C. H. Cleveland, Jr., and Thomas Hillgrove proclaimed bitterly against them and considered them unfashionable. Characteristically, northern New Englanders paid no heed to such high falutin' fiats, and continued dancing contras with as much verve and zest as ever." The Northern Junket, February 1953
32 papes, paperback, a reproduction of the original for $5.00 plus $1.00 S & H
100% of the proceeds from your purchase is donated by Civil War Lady for the benefit the West Side Soldiers Aid Society / West Side Victorian Dancers in their mission to aid today's soldiers and veterans. Thank you for your purchase and for your support of our Vets!
