What to Wear to the Ball?
1860's Period dress is required for the evening! The following information may assist you.
We recognize that beginning reenactors may not yet have formal ball wear for the evening and recommend that they wear their very best 1850's - 1860's reenacting apparel The guidelines below are to assist those entering the ballroom for the very first time, or who are beginners at reenacting.
We know our guests will graciously welcome our new dancers into the warm family of reenacting!
For Gentlemen:
For Ladies:
Must be over the age of 13 + accompanied by a parent ~ Must be dressed in correct formal dress appropriate to their age. No sneakers please!

For Gentlemen:
- All branches of 1860's Military Welcome in Blue or Gray
- This means your best Military Apparel at any rank worn with white gloves.
- Mens Civilian 1860's wear ( you will want to wear your suit coat, sack coat, or jacket with tie).
- Wear your nicest period Civilian attire with white gloves
- For Gentlemen desiring to rent a Tux package for the evening, we are aware that T & S Menswear, across the street from the Gettysburg Hotel (717) 334-7575
where the ball is held, has a period Tux Rental package for the ball
for the evening - ask for the package or for Susan to assist you.
- Historical Impressionists: Please contact us as not to duplicate noted characters being portrayed!
For Ladies:
- 1850's - 1860's period evening wear
- We present a few guidelines to assist our new participants so they may feel comfortable in the ballroom:
- We are in the ballrooml Floral, Feathers, Ribbons, Lace etc were worn in the hair for evening & balls. Hats & bonnets are worn outdoors...
- White or light pastel gloves are a must. Kid leather preferred, but many wear wrist length cotton for the evening.
- Ball gowns are preferred wear. Dinner Gowns or your very best 1860's day dress are alternatives.
- Comfortable dance shoes (photos of examples below to assist you).
- Wraps:
are normally worn outdoors. If you prefer a light shawl, it should be
placed at your seat while dancing and not worn on the dance floor.
- Please

ladies present will assist you with any questions at the ball, we
welcome you into the fold of fellowship of history & living history!
